Evaluation Activity 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music magazines)

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of music magazines)

For my magazine, it mostly develops the music magazine for the conventions and both my magazine and the NME magazine above use:

A pull quote is used from the double page spread which highlights what the interview is going to be like. This develops the magazine forms of conventions as NME uses a quote from Laura Marling.

Both use a masthead as well, however, NME goes slightly behind the photograph but this would be fine as NME are a well established music magazine, whereas 'Melody' is placed across the top of the magazine as it is a new magazine which would want to become well recognised.

Both the photos used are mid shot photos, therefore mine follows the convention of this magazine cover.

Both also list other bands to attract different types of people who like different types of genre to my magazine. They are also used as cover lines to show which artists will be featured in the issue this month. Both also have the bar code, date, issue and price; however, on mine it  is placed at the top underneath the masthead, but NME uses the date, issue and price above the masthead and the barcode at the bottom.

My magazine does slightly veer away from NME:

This is a competition to pull in the audience who like Snow Patrol. This would help sell the magazine as Snow Patrol are a well known band, which would also advertise themselves as well as their tour.
My magazine also uses coverlines to interest the reader and inform them of what is in this magazine; however, NME doesn't do this and they are only publishing their cover artists as they only include a pull quote from her interview

The two magazines have two different colour schemes. NME normally uses the typical black, white and red (blue is used as a special addition) as it is the normal conventions of a music magazine. My magazine uses black, white and purple as the purple is leaning towards the female marketing, which is what my magazine is aimed at where as, NME has a ranging target audience.

Both the artists used are represented in a laid back style. Laura Marling is holding a mug and a cigarette which pragmatically suggest that she is just that for a quick catch up. My magazine is fairly laid back as no certain pose is being used and the artist has glasses placed on her t-shirt, which shows she is laid back about the photo that had been taken.

No certain musical props are used which doesn't suggest if it is a music magazine or not, however, the subheading under the NME (new musical express) highlights it is a music magazine. Mine does this by the coverlines that it uses "The top 10 artists to be found" and "Music, Fashion and celebrities are the talk of this month."

  1. This is a good first draft Jemma, remember to explain any decisions which 'veer' away from conventions. Try also to explain why you have conformed to conventions in certain areas.
