This is my first initial design for my front cover. Sticking with the original black, white and blue colour pallet, I decided to but the title as black with a bold font as it needs to be eye catching to the audience, and it will also be written in the top left as this is the first thing the buyer will see. I've gone with the mid shot first as I want it to focus on the artist and not on the fashion side. The writing will be written across the left side as people read from left to write, so the barcode will be placed at the bottoms as it's the last thing they'll read. The font colour for the puffs will again be black, with the more important information in the blue, but written in bold. The background will be plain white, unless I decide to have scenery in my imagery which will then become the background, however, I'll need to be careful with this as I don't want it to be distracting.
I decided to only put one main and large picture in the middle of the contents page of the person on the front cover, this is due to the fact I wanted smaller pictures round the side, relating to what is on other pages in my magazine. For example, in the magazine 'drummer' it uses one large image, followed by 4 separate images surrounding this. Again, following on from the first cover page, I have decided to use a black and bold title so it highlights clearly the page. I have also decided to have the numbers in blue, surrounded by a blue box, which will be filled white, so you can see the number still. These again will be down the left side of the page, and the writing will again be in black, to make it clear. Another main feature of a contents page, it having a 'subscribe' cut out at the bottom, I feel this would be a good as another music magazine that has the same feature is NME. Also, I have put the page number in the bottom corner as this is where it it normally found.

For the double page spread, I have decided to that the title on one page, a pull quote from the article, and the 1 big picture on the other side. Again, the title is in black to carry on from the contents page. I have set it out in columns, like magazine articles are usually in, as it looks like the writing is compressed and there is less, making the reader want to read the whole article. The questions will be written in black, with the word Q: next to it, to indicate it's a question, and the artist name will be written in blue, with the letter L: followed by what they have said. I have decided where it says '2nd picture' there will be no picture as there seems no point as their is a bigger picture above

Here, I have decided to go with the blue title, as I think it could work on the background, however, I'm not sure if it will stand out more than the black as I think it is bolder. The picture this time is a long shot as I feel the artist will be able to express themselves through their fashion. Again, the writing will be written across the left hand side, but also across the write as I want to push the picture further to the left. The date, issue and year will be written underneath the writing in a smaller font as I don't want it to be the main attraction. The barcode will again be placed at the bottom of the page as it's the last thing they'll see. This varies from the first design as the picture shot has changed, along with the title colour and where the information is written. Out of both styles, I think I like design number one, but with the picture idea of design 2. So, this is something to think about in design 3.

Similar to the first design, the title will again be at the top. I think this is were it will stay when I design my magazine as it is easily recognisable here, which will again be blue to follow on from the cover. Instead of having one big picture, I have decided to have 2 separate photos, with the writing between them. I am keeping the same colours as design one, as I think it works. The only thing I have changed on this is the overall layout of the page. I like the idea of having two separate smaller photos on the page, which breaks up the text, however, I'm not sure that breaking up the text across the page is a good idea, but I will be able to see this design when on photo shop. Again, I'm keeping main subheadings which will be easy to navigate through the magazine and keeping the numbers on the left side of the writing. Also, I'm keeping the subscribe at the bottom as this is a regular feature.

The title goes across the two pages as it shows the two pages link together. I also put two pictures on two pages to also show this, although, I think the positioning of the pictures need to change. Again, the writing will be in columns across both pages, with the writing colours and fonts being the same as before. The only main difference in this is the pictures as there are now two instead of one, however, I'm not sure this is a good design and the page may be come too cluttered.
Clear explanations Jemma. Try and create some mock ups using 'found' images just to see how it looks in terms of composition.
