Research into rock genres

After deciding a Magazine title, it is clear that now the main focus of my magazine will be rock. I then decided to research rock as I know of many different categories such as:
  • Soft rock
  • Glam rock
  • Heavy metal
  • Hard rock
  • Progressive rock
  • Punk rock
I have then looked into each of the different categories further and I think to suit my target audience- of both males and females that soft rock is the genre that both will like- maybe more females than males.

Soft rock is defined as being a combination of Folk rock and singer-songwriter pop which often focus on themes such as: love, every day life and relationship. The genre tends to involve musical instruments such as: of acoustic guitars, pianos, synthesizers and sometimes saxophones. The electric guitars in soft rock are normally faint and high-pitched. Many rock groups consist of a: electric guitarist,  lead singer, bass guitar and a drummer.

Bands/ solo artists which are considered to have a 'soft rock' genre are:
  • The Eagles
  • Elton John
  • Celine Dion
  • The Carpenters
  • Cold play
  • Alanis Morrissette
  • K.T Tunsall
  • Kelly Clarkson
I feel that out of that list- teenagers will know most of those. There is a mixture of bands and artists so I will need to take into consideration when I choose who will be going on my front cover.

  1. Remember Jemma that you will be creating your own band, not using an existing one. You can base them on a existing soft rock acts but they cannot be the same as them. In terms of 'soft rock' you've also got Snow Patrol, Keane and U2.

The danger with Soft Rock is that certain artists are a bit 'old' and appeal to Mums and Dads. If you're appealing to Teens you'll need to avoid similarities to the Eagles etc

  2. Yes, I know I will be creating my own band, these are just bands that I feel that I can create my own band around- as both Coldplay and Keane consist of four band member which is what a Soft Rock band contain.

As for artists that are a bit 'old' as you've said there are bands such as Snow Patrol, Keane, Coldplay and U2 which teenagers are more likely to have heard of
