I decided to take several photos of my model to try and create a: look, pose, shot and mis-en scene that I am thinking of for my cover, contents page and DPS.
1) This is the first outfit and pose that I considered. I like the outfit as it is black and white- which are the two main colours of my colour pallet- and also the blue coloured jeans- which I have kept a constant feature throughout the photos. I also kept the make-up the same too, as it was minimal and looked good with the black and white top. The hand on the hip shows the confidence of the model, as shown in the male gaze theory. The model is picture in the centre, however, the eyes closed shows that they don't want to make direct eye contact with the audience, and the head is also turned slightly to the right. Overall, I think this is a good photo, however, I'm not sure about having it on the cover due to the eyes being closed, but I could consider featuring this on contents page or DPS.
2) After this, thinking about positioning and camera angles, I decided to take a long shot of my model, to highlight the clothing and pose of my model. I like the stance as the hand towards the chest shows protection, with the hand behind the back. I also like the way the foot is positioned, with the leg slightly bent with the heel on the wall, which shows a confidence. I kept the clothing the same in this photo as again, I still think it works well. I think would work well on the contents page or the DPS, as I would like my cover to be either mid shot or a close up, as it is less focus on the style and posing.
3) I feel this would be the most suitable on to go on my cover page out of them all so far as I like the idea of a close shot and looking at the audience, as the eyes are a main focus point. again, keeping the same clothing and make up as it went with the clothing, I feel this would be the best pose and camera shot to add on my cover page as the eye contact with the audience is held. I like the idea of having a plain background as using scenery would have taken the main focus off the artist, which is not something that I would like to do. I feel the close up shot is more open and suggests that the artist is wanting them to take a look into their lives, whereas the other to shots are further away and more impersonal
4) I think that this picture, like the last long shot is good as it highlights the clothing and pose of the model with the hands on the hips showing the audience that she is strong and confident, however, her head is turned slightly to the side, something which I like in my photos as it is not direct eye contact with the audience, which shows the picture isn't 'forced' and uncomfortable to look at. I think the clothing is also good, as the red stands out from the background, and the neckless is highlighted well. Again, the make-up is kept the same as before as I like the simple make up as it isn't too over the top and is not the key- it doesn't suggest its a fashion magazine.
5) I like the idea of using a prop, as a microphone is clearly linked in with the music genre. Again, the pose is similar to the one above as the hand on the hips shows she is strong and confident, something which I think my artist should have. I like the use of a mid shot here as I feel the microphone and artist is clearly the focal point of the shot here. The eyes are open but again not directly staring at the audience, I like this as the head is slightly titled upwards which also can suggest she is strong and is determined.
6) Again, I liked the idea of using the microphone as a prop as is links in with the music magazine, however, I'm not sure about the clothing style here as it does not suggest the soft rock genre, and may appear to be too laid back, however, the blue does go with my colour pallet and there is also black from the microphone and white from the detail in the top. The model here has her eyes closed, something which I do not want, but I like the pose as she is bent down can show even though she is a 'up and coming' star she wants to be considered like everyone else. Overall, the pose and prop is something which I would like for my front cover picture.
7) On this photo, I like the styling, as it contains all three colours from my colour palett and also the use of a microphone. I like the hand on the hip and the way she is not looking at the audience. I think this would be the best one to put on my DPS as the mid shot does not focus on the fashion side. I think the styling and make up work well together as the checkered shirt shows a relaxed dress sense, something which I like. The jeans are a constant feature of the model, as this is typically what a soft rock artist would wear, something that is simple and relaxed.
Out of all the photos I took, I feel that 7 here were the best as they range in the type of shots, clothing, style and props used. I feel that number 5, with the styling of number 1-3, would be the best to go on my front cover, as the style shows a slightly rocky side by using the white and black, and the use of the pose and prop in number 5 clearly highlights its a music magazine. Numbers 1 and 3 would be the two that I would use on my contents page as they are both different shots and different poses, even if the styling is the same, and would keep the continuity throughout the page. Finally, I think number 7 would be the best for the DPS as the style here shows she is relaxed and the hand on the hip shows confidence, the prop again shows the passion for music and overall the mid shot works well as it only focuses on the artist, the prop and the top part of the model.
I like 5 6 and 7, as they are not quite as 'staged' somehow. Is there an existing cover you like that you can re-create? Do some research but I think Pink the singer's strong images seem similar to what you are trying to achieve?
